The Daniel Dilchand story…

Persons willing to assist paralysed teen
FOLLOWING the publication of Daniel Dilchand’s story in yesterday’s edition of the Guyana Chronicle, there have been some positive responses by persons willing to assist the paralysed teen.
Pandit Suresh Sugrim, of the New Jersey Arya Samaj Mandir, Inc., Humanitarian Mission in the United States said that he is coming to Guyana on July 15, 2011, and would like to meet Daniel to make the necessary arrangements.
Another person, Eric Khadaroo, from the U.S., has also pledged his support in assisting Daniel and he is communicating through Mr. Sugrim.
A call to the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security yesterday revealed that the Minister was away from the city, and the Welfare Department could not make a comment without the Minister’s okay.
Daniel Dilchand, 12, of 619 ‘C’ Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, is a student of Tucville Secondary School and  is paralysed.
He currently lives in a small, wooden shack he shares with his three brothers, his mother and stepfather.
One of his brothers died Sunday after complaining of feeling unwell.

Daniel is paralysed after he was beaten in the back with a ‘scrubbing board’ (a board used for washing clothes) by a woman, whom his mother had given him to.
Daniel said that about three years ago his mother gave him away to a woman, who also resides in Sophia.
This woman physically assaulted him and one day she hit him in his back with a scrubbing board. He is now paralysed and has to use a wheelchair.
Daniel, a bit shy and timid, told the Guyana Chronicle that he would like to walk again someday, but even standing up is very painful.
Daniel is also the victim of physical abuse at the hands of his stepfather, and is often locked out of the house.
The teen is also neglected.
