Neighbours told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday that, on Saturday night, there was a fight in the home between the step father and mother during yet another drinking spree in which Dilchand was a participant, an occurrence they described as being usual.
Reports said the duo were imbibing in the small wooden building (shack) they shared with three other children when they began fighting.
It was sometime before Dilchand told neighbours he was not well and asked for a painkiller and went back inside, but early yesterday morning he began vomiting and collapsed by the door where he died.
It was also reported that Dilchand had returned home from the interior where he worked and may have contracted malaria, while his relatives believe he was poisoned while drinking ‘high wine’ since he was a witness in a murder case.
It was unclear what transpired, but neighbours said the police came after they were summoned and took away Dilchand’s mother and stepfather while the body was taken away by a hearse.
At the scene yesterday, blood was evident in a heap of sand in the yard, while on the floor there were several pieces of blood-stained clothing.
The police also took away several blood-stained items from the home.
Neighbours said that Dilchand’s mother is a single parent of five children and works as a security guard but is unable to read and write. As a result, her paramour usually goes to the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) and withdraws her salary, which he reportedly spends on liquor.
This usually causes a fight since the woman and her children are consequently left without food and other basic necessities. However, whenever she voices her concerns she is (allegedly) brutally beaten by the man.
The woman’s three sons, one of whom is paralysed, reside with her, while she was forced to give her daughter away to another family because their step father does not want them around.
