Debra Ann Collins, of 141 Block 22, Wismar, Linden, yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, charged with trafficking in narcotics.
Particulars of the offence stated that on June 27, at David Street, Kitty, Collins had in her possession 934 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry changed the guilty plea to a not guilty plea after the defendant had explained to the court that she knew nothing about the substance.
Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit Special Prosecutor, Oswald Messiah, prosecuting, said that on the day in question, the defendant left her home in Wismar, Linden, and went to a shipping agent on David Street, in the Kitty area to post a box to Port Kaituma.
Messiah added that in the process of shipping the box, Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit officers identified the box and it was searched. It contained a Fernleaf milk tin and a cornflakes box with the substance inside.
The prosecutor also said that when asked by the officers about the substance, she did not respond. She was arrested .
The woman explained to the court that when she was asked by the officers about the substance she had no idea what was in the box . She said someone had given her the box to post to Port Kaituma.
Bail was refused and the matter was transferred to Court 5, where Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton remanded Collins to prison. She will return to court on September 2.
