$42.2M contract signed for construction of Capoey access road

The Government of Guyana yesterday signed a $42.2M contract for the construction of the Capoey access road on the Essequibo Coast.
Chairman of Region Two, Alli Baksh, who witnessed the signing at Capoey Lake, told scores of residents that the project will benefit them.
Baksh said rice farmers will also benefit in terms of transporting their produce from rice field to factories.

Design Engineer for Public Works in the Ministry of Public Works and Communication, Khairaj Bissesar, said the entire access road, 9,350 feet by 14 feet wide, will be rehabilitated and constructed with loam, white sand in some areas and crusher run materials.
According to the engineer, Essequibo contractor Mohamed Fawaz Bacchus has four months to complete the project.
Toshoa of Capoey, Valarie De Young, said she is very thankful to the government and President Bharrat Jagdeo for the project.
According to the Toshoa, the new access roadway, when completed, will make travelling very comfortable from the public road to the lake top, and will encourage residents to purchase vehicles and motorcycles.
Regional Executive Officer, Sunil Singh, called on residents to monitor the project carefully while construction work is in progress.
Paulette Budburgh, who was among the scores of residents who witnessed the signing of the contract, said she is very grateful to the government for making money available for the construction of the road.
Another resident, Glenda Shew, said she is very glad that the road will be constructed and is thankful to the government for fulfilling another promise to Amerindians of Capoey.
Toshoa DeYoung said residents will be on the ground to monitor the construction work.
