Members of the Upper Corentyne Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UCCCI) Wednesday said they were optimistic about imminent improvements in the procedures for clearing imports on the Guyana/Suriname border, following a high level meeting with the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA)and senior officials of the private sector yesterday. The meeting was held at the Riverton Suites at Corriverton and was described as a GRA/private sector outreach to the Upper Corentyne.
The GRA/private sector team comprised Commissioner General of the Guyana Revenue Authority, Mr. Kurshid Sattaur; his Deputy, Mr. Clement Sealey ; Chairman of the Private Sector Commission (PSC), Mr. Ramesh Dookhoo; President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), Mr Komal Ramnauth; President of the Guyana Manufacturing Services Association (GMSA), Mr. Clinton Williams; and Mr. Chandradat Chintamani, among others.
President of the UCCCI Mr. Vishnu Doerga said that members felt that the meeting had been very successful.
“Many of our members who are large importers were there. They were able to raise issues affecting their activities and these and other issues were effectively addressed by the visiting team,” he said.
He said that some of the improvements promised should help to curb what many legitimate people in the Corentyne regard as the very vexatious problem of smuggling of goods into Guyana from Suriname.
