A man was yesterday sentenced to six years imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to two counts of break and enter and larceny charges. Marl Dummett, 44, of 37 Ketley Street, Charlestown, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, and particulars of the charges stated that between June 15 and 16, he broke and entered Maggie’s Snackette and stole a quantity of items valued at $366,000, property of Cindy Maloney.
The other charge stated that between June 19 and 20, he broke and entered the Universal Electronic Store and stole a quantity of items valued at $488,000, property of Lawrence Braithwaite.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, told the court that the defendant is not a first offender and the matters are of similar nature. She said the defendant took police to where he had the items and they were recovered.
The defendant admitted that he took the items and that he was under the influence at the time. He said he has a drinking and smoking problem and would commit the offences whenever he smoked or was under the influence.
Dummette denied breaking into the store; he said a car crashed into the store and at the time he was passing and decided to pick up the items.
Before sentencing the defendant, the magistrate noted that he is not a first offender.
She sentenced him to three years on each charge, which will run one after another (consecutively).
