A MAN was remanded to prison yesterday, by Magistrate Chandra Sohan, on 17 traffic charges.
The offences with which Kelston Adams, 33, of Lot 118 Parade Street, Kingston, is charged, range from dangerous driving, being an unlicensed driver, breach of insurance and failure to give the right of way.
He pleaded not guilty to all, including 14 dangerous driving charges, which stated that, on June 11, at 14 different locations between Georgetown and Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, he drove minibus, BKK 2712, in a manner dangerous to the public.
Adams also faced a charge of being an unlicensed driver, on Avenue of the Republic, in the city, too, as well as driving the vehicle while a policy of insurance in respect to third party risk was not in force at the time.
One more charge said, on the approach of an approved police vehicle, he failed to stop as near as possible to the left side of the road and remain stationary until it had passed.
Police Sergeant Kevin London, prosecuting, who successfully objected to bail for the defendant said Adams committed serious offences and, if granted pre-trial freedom, he is likely to commit others.
The prosecutor alleged that the defendant drove the minibus without the owner’s consent and other charges might be instituted against him.
London said a roadblock had been set up but the defendant failed to stop and collided with a Police car but he was finally stopped at Kitty Police Station, with the help of other ranks who were informed and gave back-up.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Mohammed Zaffar denied that Adams is a flight risk and said he had no previous cases in court.
The lawyer maintained that Adams was not the driver of the minibus nor did he commit any of the offences.
Adams has to be back in Court on Friday, June 17.
