ACTO Secretary General on official visit to Guyana


SECRETARY General of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organisation (ACTO) Mr. Alejandro Gordillo is currently on an official visit to Guyana for the period June 11 – 15, 2011.
Ambassador Gordillo’s  visit to Guyana is part of a familiarization process with member countries since his assumption of office on March 1, 2011 and it is intended to afford him the opportunity to engage high level officials in Guyana who facilitate the coordination of the various programmes and projects undertaken by ACTO.

During his visit here, Ambassador Gordillo is expected to meet with Guyanese Head of State  President Bharrat Jagdeo; as well as several of the Cabinet ministers.
Among those he had meetings with so far are Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms. Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett and Agriculture Minister Mr. Robert Persaud.
According to a statement from the Government Information Agency (GINA), he also had the opportunity to visit the Golden Grove/ Belfield Mangrove Reserve on the East Coast of Demerara.
The Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization, (ACTO) is an international organization which is responsible for enhancing and strengthening cooperation amongst member states in the Amazon region.
The organization, in its present form, was derived from the Amazon Cooperation Treaty (ACT) which was signed on the 3 July 1978 by Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela to promote joint actions towards the harmonious development of the Amazon Basin.
Some of the projects/ programmes of ACTO include ACTO/IDB Project Environmental Health Surveillance System for the Amazon Region; ACTO/UNEP Project – Integrated and Sustainable Management of Transboundary Water Resources in the Amazon River Basin Considering Climate Variability and Climate Change; ITTO/ACTO Project – Monitoring of Deforestation and Changing Land Use in Amazonian Forest.
Guyana has been actively involved in the abovementioned projects and programmes.

Ambassador Alejandro Gordillo is a former career diplomat who has served extensively in Peru’s Foreign Ministry and its Missions abroad as Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco, Brazil,The Dominican Republic, The Bahamas and Colombia, to name a few.
