FOOTBALL referees from around the country, who are attached to the Guyana Football Referees Council (GFRC) will take part in their second FIFA Fitness Test today, at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary, starting at 15:00hrs. The Fitness Test will attract close to 60 male and female referees from Bartica, Berbice, Georgetown, Linden, West Demerara and East Demerara. They will compete in the following categories FIFA referees (male and female), FIFA assistant referees (male and female) and national referees and assistant referees.
The programme is organised by the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) in collaboration with the GFRC and provides referees with an opportunity to improve their level of fitness ahead of local, regional and international matches, with the results forwarded to FIFA for appraisal and action.
The test, which follows on the heels of the first test that was conducted in March of this year at the same venue, will be supervised by GFF Fitness Instructor Lindley Langhorne, Referees Coordinator Roy McArthur and Lawrence ‘Sparrow’ Griffith, GFF Administrator.
Secretary of the GFRC, Troy Peters, expressed gratitude to the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Defence Force for their kind assistance, saying the GFRC appreciates the support of Commissioner of Police Henry Greene and Colonel Bruce Lovell.
Meanwhile, Anson Ambrose of Georgetown, Dwayne Johnson of East Coast Demerara and Milton Reynolds of Berbice were successful at a recently held Fitness Instructors Training Course conducted by Langhorne at the GFF Office.
Langhorne said the participants were exposed to both theory and practical sessions and will be better equipped to conduct FIFA Fitness Tests and to evaluate referees locally in the future.
