LEADER of the PNCR Robert Corbin expressed his party’s concerns with some aspects of the Guyana Elections Commission’s preparations as the countdown begins to national and regional elections later in the year.
“We are in the midst of the claims and objections period at the moment. We have some concerns, which we have written GECOM about, particularly in monitoring the IT Department because of certain matters that we have discovered. We are hoping to have a meeting very shortly with them. That meeting is fixed for [today],” said Corbin, in an invited comment to the Guyana Chronicle during Parliament yesterday.
Presidential Candidate for the PPP/C, Donald Ramotar, speaking yesterday to Chronicle, said that there are still some concerns on his party’s part with GECOM and the preparations for elections. “We have concerns with the birth certificate issues but I notice over the last week or two that things have accelerated a bit,” he said.
“We are working feverishly to get people to get on to the list to make sure that those things are okay. GECOM said that they would be ready in October, so it is likely that elections will be in the second half of October or in November, 2011,” he said. “But nothing has been fixed. Nothing has been decided yet. It is just my estimation of when it could be,” he said.
Of late, all of the major parties contesting the elections have been urging persons to ensure that their names are on the list and that they are properly registered. It is estimated that a significant number of persons are still to uplift their new ID cards from the registration process of 2008.
