Food for the Poor commissioning $65.7M housing project
FOOD for the Poor (Guyana) Inc. will commission a $65.7M housing project in the Amerindian community of Capoey on Essequibo Coast, tomorrow, as part of its 20th anniversary programme of activities.
A release from the charitable organisation said the scheme involves the construction of 50 houses and sanitary blocks, a nursery school, a community centre and a water facility.
A chicken venture to provide the means of earning is also part of the undertaking to benefit 50 under-privileged Capoey families.
The release said the collaborative effort, by Food for the Poor, Roetheli Lil’ Red Foundation of the United States (U.S.) and the Government of Guyana, previously saw the commissioning of housing schemes at Onderneeming, Siriki in Upper Pomeroon River and Mainstay, all in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam).
Food for the Poor started operations in Guyana on June 3, 1991, under the Executive Director, Mr. Leon Davis and a board of directors, chaired by Mr. Paul Chan-A-Sue.
Its office was first located in High Street, Kingston, before relocation to Forshaw and Oronoque Streets, Queenstown and because of the tremendous growth of the organization, it moved, in 1997, to the present headquarters on Blue Mountain Road, Festival City, North Ruimveldt, also in Georgetown.
The organisation said it has accomplished 20 years of service to the poor and will be celebrating through June 3, with church services, a day of reflection and brunch at the Head Office, feeding the elderly at Uncle Eddie’s Home, a public exhibition at Umana Yana, in the city, too, as well as the inauguration of Lil Red Village (at Capoey).
