After two more deaths…

Berbice 2011 road fatalities exceed 2010 number
TWO more road fatalities have been recorded in Berbice, the latest following an accident along the Corentyne Highway on the anniversary of Independence Day.
Thirteen-year-old Savitri Persaud, of Number 68 Village, was pronounced dead on arrival at Skeldon Hospital, Corentyne, after being hit by a speeding motor vehicle, PKK 150, driven by an interdicted Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Lance Corporal.

The teenager was walking along the public thoroughfare in Number 70 Village, in company with others, when it was alleged that she, suddenly, ran across the road and was struck by the front right side of the jeep.
She was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to hospital where she died and is awaiting a post mortem examination.
Meanwhile, Seechand Hamid, who was previously unidentified, died on Cotton Tree Public Road, West Coast Berbice, last week Tuesday evening after being hit by mini-bus number BHH 1812.
Reports said the vehicle was proceeding in an easterly direction and, while negotiating a turn in the vicinity of the gasolene station, the driver saw a man stooping on the wet roadway and made a futile effort to avoid hitting him.
The injured man was taken to Fort Wellington Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The body of Hamid, 44, was identified on Friday morning after his daughter; Chandwattie Hamid had reported him missing and was advised to check at Fort Wellington Hospital mortuary.
An autopsy report on him is also being awaited.
Berbice Traffic Chief, Police Superintendent Kevin Adonis said, of the nine persons killed on the roadways in the ‘Ancient County’, this year, three were pedestrians.
The number of fatalities have exceeded the corresponding period last year by four. (JEUNE BAILEY VAN-KERIC)
