MCYS/RSTC Independence 5k on today

THE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS) in collaboration with the Rising Stars Track Club (RSTC) will hold its post-Independence 5k road race this afternoon starting at 16:00hrs in front of the MCYS Main Street office. According to coordinator of the event and RSTC coach Leslie Black, MCYS Minister Dr. Frank Anthony will send the athletes on their way and, along with Director of Sport Neil Kumar, will assist with the presentation of prizes to the respective winners.
The athletes will make their way south along Main Street, turn west by the Cenotaph and head north along Main Street to the Guyana Pegasus, where they turn and head south back to the place of origin, doing so twice.
Athletes will compete in three categories, namely Masters, Open and Juniors with the top three finishers in the Masters category taking home $10 000, $7 000 and $5 000 respectively, while the top three in the Open category will pocket $20 000, $15 000 and $10 000 each.
No monetary reward will be given to the top finishers in the Junior category, but the clubs they represent will receive same.
Athletes expected to face the starter include Junior Carifta Games gold medallist Jevina Straker, Ashanti Scott, Alika Morgan and Trinidad and Tobago-based Guyanese Oslyn Collins while Cleveland Forde, Dennis Horatio and Cleveland Thomas, among others, will do battle in the male category.
