KFC, Pizza Hut management debunk letter writer’s claims

WITH reference to a letter published in the Guyana Chronicle newspaper dated May 20, 2011, page 6,
Captioned “KFC, Pizza Hut employees being mistreated” written by one Cleon Marshall (no address provided), who may not exist, the company hereby gives a response.
Regarding the use of telephones while on duty, this is prohibited. Only in cases of emergency will telephone calls be allowed. To date, there is no factual evidence about any fast food restaurant, whether local or international, that allows employees to use the telephone while on duty.
In relation to the issue of managers reprimanding employees in the presence of customers, this  is false. Our brand standards give clear guidelines coupled with  Guyana’s Labour Laws as to how to deal with employees’ discipline.
Further, to the wages and deduction issues, our employees are required to work six days per week which may include a Sunday, which is a double-pay day. Employees at entry level earn an average of $61,000 monthly gross pay. Hence, taking the writer’s monthly earnings of $45,500 per month, the monthly deduction for contributions toward NIS / GRA should be $5,865 using the statutory deduction formula of a free pay and not $1,600 as quoted in the article by the concerned writer.
