Irrigation of rice fields underway in Region Two

VICE-CHAIRMAN of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Vishnu Samaroo has reported that the Drainage and Irrigation (D&I) Department of the Regional Administration has started to irrigate rice fields in preparation for sowing for the Autumn Crop. He said farmers are making full use of the hot weather to plough and chip their cultivations.
According to him, planters between Huis t’Dieren and Good Hope on the Essequibo Coast have requested the irrigation, and water has been released from the main canal to facilitate this request.
Samaroo said irrigation is also in progress from Airy Hall to Anna Regina and will start in other areas subsequently.
A total of 32,500 acres is expected to be put under the plough in the Region. (Rajendra Prabhulall)
