Cabinet hopes REDjet coming would relieve Guyanese travellers – Luncheon

HEAD of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, yesterday, expressed the hope of Cabinet that the coming on stream of REDJet will bring relief to the Guyanese traveller who has been taken advantage of by Caribbean Airlines. Speaking at his weekly media briefing, in Office of the President, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown, he said Cabinet was advised about the results of specific interventions to address the advantage that Caribbean Airlines is taking on Guyanese travelling to Trinidad on its flights.
Luncheon said that, earlier, Caribbean Airlines had escalated its charge for the Georgetown to Port of Spain route to as much as US$450.
“Cabinet was advised that some progress had been made among which were that the airfare had been significantly reduced. The report was that there was almost a 50 per cent reduction in the fare from Georgetown to Port of Spain. Our understanding was that it was with effect from a current date,” said the HPS.
“More importantly for Cabinet, the low cost carrier, REDjet had succeeded in getting its licence to operate in Trinidad and offer its low fares to travellers,” he said, recalling that there had been some delay in the carrier acquiring its licence to operate in Trinidad.
Luncheon continued: “Hopefully, REDjet’s impact on fares and the treatment of Guyanese travellers would see some significant improvement.”
