Chanderpaul hits ton number four for GYO; Morris also hits century for TSC
GANDHI Youth Organisation’s (GYO) Tagenarine Chanderpaul struck his fourth century in this year’s Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)-organised Brain Street Under-15 competition yesterday, guiding his team to a comfortable 75-run victory over Transport Sports Club (TSC).
Also hitting a century was TSC’s Keon Morris, who made an unbeaten 108, which was not enough to prevent GYO from reducing their opponents to 239-8 in reply, scored off 45 overs.
Winning the toss and opting to take first strike, GYO reached 314-7 when their 55 overs expired. Chanderpaul who opened the batting for his team hit 24 fours and eight sixes in his unbeaten 200 while extras with 54, inclusive of 39 wides, and Danesh Persaud (23) offered support.
The 14-year-old Chanderpaul, who is the eldest son of Guyana and West Indies middle-order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, took his tally of runs to over 700, making him the leading run-scorer in the tournament so far.
In TSC’s reply, Morris struck 10 fours and eight sixes in his innings while Sunil Singh 51 (4×4, 4×6) and Andrew Chung 38 (4×4, 3×6) supported, against the bowling of Damien Waldron and Chanderpaul who took 3-27 and 2-41 respectively for their team.
At the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground, Demerara Cricket Club ‘A’ team scraped past Queen’s College (QC) by two wickets in an exciting encounter.
DCC ‘A’ won the toss and invited QC to take first strike and must have felt happy at such a decision, as the Camp Road-based students were dismissed for a paltry 78 from 27.1 overs, with extras leading the way with 32.
Akash Samuels and Shamar De Souza took four wickets each for 15 and 27 runs respectively for DCC ‘A’ who struggled to 79-8 in reply, of which Kemal Savory 23 (3×4) and Sherwin Bobb 13* led the way while Vickram Ramkissoon 4-19 and S. Khan 2-4 from nine overs each fought to keep QC in the hunt.
Finally, Everest Cricket Club (ECC) found themselves back in the winners’ circle, after recording a 41-run victory over St Stanislaus College (SSC) at the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) ground.
Asked to take first strike by their opponents, ECC scored 213 off 41 overs. Asif Munnilall’s led with 47 (6×4), Sherfane Rutherford 42 (5×4, 2×6) and Rajin Sookdeo 21.
Mario Persaud (3-33), Aslam Husain (2-21) and Joseph Rajkumar 2-26 did the damage with the ball for SSC who were restricted to 172-9 off 37.5 overs in reply, with Persaud returning to top-score with 55 (5×4, 3×6). Darrell Williams (26) and Marvin Scott 19 lent support.
Michael Sultan (3-32), along with Christopher Persaud and Gavin Sookdeo, who took two wickets each for 23 and 29 runs respectively, helped overcome the 10-man SSC lineup.
Across at the Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) ground, Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) made light work of the Police Sports Club (PSC) female team, walking away with a comfortable seven-wicket victory.
Batting first, PSC Ladies reached 156 off 32.4 overs before they were dismissed with female West Indies wicketkeeper/batter June Ogle-Thomas, who made a century in the last round against GYO, leading the way with 59 (8×4).
Victoria Bacchus struck seven fours and one six in her 42, offering support to Ogle-Thomas as Inceford Charles with 3-28 and Donovan Zammett and Dale Mendonca took two wickets each for 48 and 11 runs respectively for MSC, who scored 157-3 from 33.1 overs to complete the victory.
Steve Mangal 38 (6×4, 1×6), Ibrahim Khan 37 (3×6, 2×4), Rockell Reddy 35* (2×4, 1×6) and Mendonca 24* led the Thomas Lands-based MSC side to victory, even though Bacchus returned with the ball to pick up 2-40 for her side who conceded a mere six extras to the MSC batting lineup.
The DCC/Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) encounter which was played at the University of Guyana (UG) ground, ended in an exciting draw.
DCC batted first and recovered from losing Khemraj Rupee (0) off the first ball of the match, to reach 208-5 from 48 overs, with Michael Shalim (79, 7×4, 1×6) and Tevin Imloch 60 (5×4) adding 127 for the third wicket, after Imloch and Kwesi Lewis (29) had added 61 for the second wicket.
Samuel Graham took 2-27 for GCC who were shakily placed on 88-9 off 37 overs, when play was called off with M. Forde leading the way with 26 against the bowling of Alistair Fields, Devon Crandon and Daniel Manohar who took two wickets each for 15, 16 and 23 runs respectively for DCC.
Ninth-round action in this competition will bowl off today, with GCC and PSC Ladies meeting at GDF, and ECC and TSC clashing at GNIC, while the DCC ‘A’ and QC fixture that was scheduled to be played at the UG ground has been cancelled.
