THE Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) is a constitutional body which must be commended for discharging its constitutional duties without fear or favour. The ERC, in its deliberation of the President’s Babu John speech made in March this year, found that the speech was not inflammatory but cautioned at the avoidance of mentioning historical facts that could promote hostility. However, ERC missed the contextual value of the president’s speech, i.e., the track record of David Granger, a candidate for high office in an election. In every free and democratic society in which there is campaigning, the candidates and the public expect to be grilled on their track record.
Granger has apparently succeeded in convincing Stabroek News, Kaieteur News and others that his track record in the military during the 1973 elections should not be a matter of concern to the electorate and he should not answer the charges made.
