Miller sets new CARIFTA mark as Jamaica extend stranglehold

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica (CMC) – Ashinia Miller set a new shot put record to underline Jamaica’s dominance in the morning session of the final day at the 40th CARIFTA Games here yesterday. Miller, who finished with silver last year in Cayman Islands, measured 19.47 metres to win the Under-20 Boys event at the Catherine Hall Sports Complex.
He easily beat out fellow Jamaica Travis Smikle (18.58) and Trinidadian Akeem Stewart who was forced to settle for bronze.
Jamaica also captured the Girls’ Under-17 high jump and the Under-17 discus, to pick up an impressive three gold medals of the five available in the morning session.
Petergaye Reid leaped 1.78m to claim the high jump, with Dominica’s Thea Lafond second with 1.75m and St Lucia’s Jeanelle Scheper claiming bronze with a leap of 1.70m.
In the discus, Gleneve Grange measured 40.98 metres, to finish well ahead of her compatriot Paul Ann Gayle (38.88) and Trinidadian Marielle Pierre (34.57).
Trinidadian Shervorne Worrell broke the Jamaican stronghold as he won the Boys’ Under-17 discus with a throw of 46.60 while Yannis David of Guadeloupe brought joy to the French camp by winning the Girls’ Under-17 triple jump in 11.78 metres.
The showpiece, the Caribbean’s premier track and field meet, concluded last evening.
