Quick response saves Sophia shack from being completely destroyed by fire

QUICK thinking and collective action by public-spirited residents of ‘B’ Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown, saved a 12’ x 10’ building from being completely destroyed by fire late yesterday afternoon. The fire department was alerted and responded promptly, but the fire had already been put out by residents when the firemen arrived on the scene.
Residents said the fire started around 17:30 hrs, and it is believed to have been ‘deliberately set’, stemming from a family dispute over possession of the property.
Persons claimed they have seen one of two men who occupied the building, set fire to a mattress, after which he hurriedly walked out of the yard. They recalled the single door to the tiny building which has no electricity supply, was open and on looking inside, they saw a man setting fire to the mattress.
According to neighbours, the building was occupied by two brothers – one in his sixties and another, a few years younger. They recalled that on Good Friday, the men had a misunderstanding and as a result, one of them reported the matter to the police who intervened and put the suspect out.  However, he was not taken into custody.
Yesterday, neighbours said while the Virtual Complainant (VC) was not at home, the suspect returned to the building and allegedly set fire to it.
The building, though not completely ravaged, but badly burnt, and virtually everything inside was destroyed.
Police are investigating.
