Guyana celebrates World Health Day
IN OBSERVANCE of World Health Day, officially celebrated Thursday, the Ministry of Health hosted a health fair yesterday on Main Street here in the city to spread its awareness message on the many benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle. Health Promotion Coordinator, Ms. Sabella Yussuf, who noted that the fair was one of the many activities planned for the day, said the ministry incorporated its usual message of promoting healthy lifestyles with the theme for World Health Day, which is ‘Combating Anti-microbial Resistance’.
The activity began early in the morning with a health walk, in which some 200 persons participated.
At the fair site, which was confined to the avenue between Quamina and Church Streets, health workers busied themselves doing blood glucose (sugar) and blood pressure tests, Body Mass Index (BMI) calculations and distributing materials on advanced chronic diseases awareness.
Information on Cervical Cancer was also made available to the public, while the names were taken of those women who wish to be screened for cancer at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). At the other health-oriented booth, which was dedicated to HIV/AIDS, hand-outs included brochures and condoms.
According to Yussuf, the ministry invited the private sector to be a part of the fair so as to have a balance in the promotion of healthy lifestyles, and among those entities who took them up on their offer were the National Milling Company (NAMILCO), ANSA McAL, NESTLE, and the Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC).
Other participants included Buddy’s and Interline Gyms, both of which focused on the various techniques in exercising, and Courts Guyana Inc., which showcased the various gym equipment they have in stock.
Ms. Yussuf noted that the fair was well appreciated by the public, since there were well over 500 persons passing through, asking questions at almost every booth that was set up. (Nathalene DeFreitas)
