Pensioners money stolen in BV Post Office burglary

BETERVERWAGTING (BV) Post Office, on the East Coast Demerara, was broken into and an unknown sum of money stolen from a torched safe sometime between Tuesday night and yesterday morning.
Police Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Gavin Primo told the Guyana Chronicle that Postmistress Carolyn James and others made the discovery when they reported for work shortly before 07:00 hrs.

The cash taken was to pay old age pensioners.
Primo said the post office opens for business at 08:00 hrs and the burglars gained entry through a grilled window on the northern side of the building.
He said, once inside, they opened a door and spent some time torching the safe, which was considered very secure and took a lot of effort to be breached.
The immediate neighbours said they neither heard nor saw anything unusual but investigations into the burglary is continuing.
A statement from Ms. Yolaskee Jervis, Public Relations Officer of the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) noted that an “undisclosed sum of cash and a small quantity of stamps and phone cards were taken” during the break-in.
“The Guyana Post Office Corporation and Guyana Police Force are currently conducting an investigation into this incident,” Jervis said.
Jervis said the GPOC regrets any inconvenience that may have been experienced by persons wishing to access their regular services at this location.
“The public is hereby assured that they may continue their regular transactions at Beterverwagting Post Office from Thursday (today),” she added.
