Plans moving apace for new Mahaica Market

Government recognizes the need for a new market at Mahaica, and $100M had been allocated in 2010 for the new structure.
Yesterday, Prime Minster Samuel Hinds met with vendors of  the Mahaica Market at Helena Primary School to discuss plans for the new location of the market as well as a town square.

The meeting sought to seek cooperation for the development of the project as well as to garner ideas from vendors on possible options for the new market.
Accompanying the prime minister were Head of the Privatization Unit Winston Brassington, and Marcia Nadir –Sharma, along with officials from the NDC.
Prime Minister Hinds said that discussions were held in Parliament last week, and a number of things have to be taken into consideration for the construction of the new market, such as accommodation and parking.
A large number of vendors present at the meeting opted for enlarging the market at the present location, while a few others preferred to have it elsewhere.
Prime Minister Hinds told GINA that he was satisfied with the outcome of the meeting and a proposal by the majority of vendors would be considered.

The proposed construction cost is estimated at $ 90M for the market building.
Phase one of construction will also cater for development of the public road.

The proposed building is expected to be 15,000 to 22,500 square feet.
