Miner killed in smash-up at Bagotstown

A lethal smash-up between a Guyana Fire Service tender and a Honda motor car on the Bagotstown Public Road (opposite the Demerara Harbour Bridge) around 13:00 hrs yesterday, has left one man dead and three others in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital. Dead is Vishram Lall, 23, a motor bike rider, of 217 Second Street, Herstelling. Those hospitalised are his cousin Mikhail, 18, who was driving the car; Rajendra Lochan 23; and one whose name was only given as Richie.

The dead man’s elder brother, Vino Lall, recalled that Vishram, who owns a mining claim in the interior, was due to return to the camp site today, and was on his way to the city to purchase mechanical parts to take with him.

The four were traveling in Vino’s car, when, as they were passing the entrance to the bridge, their car collided with a fire truck which was en route to West Demerara.  Vishram, who hospital authorities said had severe internal bleeding, also suffered a broken arm and broken pelvis.  The others suffered head and other injuries and one of them was scheduled to have surgery last night.

Vino, who was baby-sitting at home, said that he should have gone with the party, but did not do so since his child was immunized the day before and he thought it best to stay with him.

Vino said that around 13:00 hrs he received a phone call from his father who had just received a phone call from a friend saying that his son’s car was involved in an accident.

He hurried to the bridge, but by then two of the injured men had been taken to the GPH and the other two, including his brother Vishram to the Diamond Regional Hospital.

Vickram is survived by his parents Omada and Seerujanie Lall, two brothers Vino and Ganesh and one sister Anupa.
