CONSTRUCTION of a larger bridge over the Sussex Street Canal in Georgetown is advancing as the contractor, R. Bassoo and Sons, seeks to complete the job by the April month end deadline. Despite delays, caused by heavy rainfall over the last two weeks, Mr. Roy Bassoo, from the contracted company, has given the assurance that the work is progressing and workers are preparing to install the two concrete abutments to the overpass.
Speaking to the Guyana Chronicle last Friday, he explained that the lack of progress over the past few days resulted from the accumulation of water at the site and efforts have been made to pump it out.
“We have had setbacks due to the rain but we have been able to handle this in an efficient manner and, hopefully, the timeframe will be met,” Bassoo said.
He said another cause of delay was due to the removal of some pipelines, which were hampering the construction.
In this regard, Bassoo said several utility companies, Guyana Power & Light (GPL), Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company (GT&T)and Guyana Water Inc.(GWI)among them, have cooperated to have their conduits removed from the area.
“Presently, we are waiting on lines from GUYOIL to be removed as they are in the way and, as soon as that is done, we can begin to install the abutments which will pave the way for the installation of the concrete flabs on the bridge,” he explained
Under the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) funded Bridges II Programme, the one on Sussex Street Bridge is being widened to accommodate four lane traffic from Broad Street continuing South to join the East Bank Demerara corridor.
