The report of six persons drowning in an accident in the Canje Creek Tuesday has been deemed a rumour by Officer in Charge of Crime, Berbice Division, Courtney Ramsay.
Ramsay confirmed that he too had heard the report, but said if there was such an occurrence, relatives would have stormed the Central Police station, seeking assistance.
On Tuesday afternoon, reports of the river tragedy spread like wild fire in the Berbice Township, resulting in persons rushing to the New Amsterdam ferry stelling  and  the town’s  municipal  wharf where craft from the riverine communities would dock.
However , while one vessel sailed from Bara Cara, Canje Creek , its occupants said they were unaware of the tragedy.
What they did see were a few head of cattle which must have drowned due to overtopping of the creek.
