PM on mining company’s driver postponed

The post mortem scheduled to be performed on Solomon Burke, the Correia Mining Company’s security driver shot and killed while on duty at Trans Guyana Airways, Ogle Airport, on Monday, had to be postponed today because the police rank entrusted with the documents to be handed over to the government pathologist, turned up too late at the mortuary.

This is according to the dead man’s reputed wife, Ms. Donna Harris, who spoke with this newspaper yesterday after leaving the mortuary.

Harris said she and Burke’s son arrived at the mortuary shortly after 05:00h and waited for hours but saw no trace of the policeman.  He never arrived until after 09:00h.
“In fact we were the first to reach there, and we waited,”  Harris said.  She said when the doctor arrived at the mortuary he carried out autopsies on other bodies, but said he could not perform one on Burke, since the police had not arrived to present him with the  relevant documents.

After the doctor had completed other autopsies and the policeman still did not show up, the Lyken representative at the mortuary advised Harris and her stepson that they would have to take the body back to the parlour, which they did.

Deeply perturbed, Ms. Harris said she telephoned the Sparendaam police and related her plight to them. It was then the woman said, she learnt that the rank in question had informed his superiors at Sparendaam that the dead man’s relatives arrived late at the mortuary, forcing the doctor to cancel the post mortem operation. Harris said she was deeply troubled at this misrepresentation of the facts.

The post mortem examination on Burke has been put back to tomorrow.

Burke was shot at close range and killed around 03:45h on Monday when armed men broke into the Trans Guyana Airways offices at Ogle, cut the power supply and carried out a robbery at the facility.

Meanwhile, as investigations continue, police have reportedly detained an ex-employee of the security firm who is assisting them with their investigations.   He was reportedly arrested on Monday.
