ACTING Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday remanded Delroy Joseph called ‘Barney’ to prison on a simple larceny charge.
He pleaded not guilty to having, between March 9 and 10, stolen $220,000 from Courtney Grimmond and was refused bail after police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said the defendant is wanted in Berbice in connection with similar offences. In the case yesterday, the prosecutor said virtual complainant was staying at a hotel but left there and went to work. But, on his return, he discovered the money missing.
Harvey said police found Grimmond’s briefcase and documents in the upper flat of the hotel and he objected to the grant of pre-trial freedom for the defendant, who gave the wrong name of Delroy Singh.
Joseph has to be back in court on April 7.
Another defendant, similarly charged, Omar Khan (no address given either) was, however, granted $25,000 bail until April 1.
He denied, in the same court, that, last February 16, he stole one pair of sneakers, valued $12,000 and two washing tubs, priced at $4,000, property of Lorenzo Alfonso.
Khan said he has already spent 18 months in prison for the same theft and alleged that the virtual complainant is trying to victimise him, again.
But the magistrate pointed out that the particulars of offence said it was committed in February this year.
