Nominees invited for African Guyanese Hall of Fame

THE All African Guyanese Council (AAGC) is inviting nominees of their choices from the public as it prepares to inaugurate its Hall of Heroes by month end.
Member of the organisation, Mr. Eric Phillips said, in a Tuesday release, that, already, there has been a tremendous response to the invitation.
The announcement is in keeping with the United Nations declaration of 2011 as the International Year for People of African Descent and the African Cultural Development Association (ACDA) has planned a series of activities.

Phillips noted that, during February which was Black History Month and  for Mashramani celebrations, there were numerous events in schools and villages in Berbice, Demerara and Essequibo.
He lauded the teachers and schools, who, on their own initiatives, are celebrating the UN designated year and emphasised the multi-culturalism of Guyana.
The AAGC wants schools, too, to become involved in the development of historical information that can be put in guideposts and, in this regard, the AAGC would like to be contacted by members of the public about the numerous contributions of African Guyanese to medicine, nursing, teaching, science and sports.
The release said they are, often times, overlooked but the AAGC, which needs expertise, can be contacted on telephone number 225-8420
Last weekend, the organisaton hosted a farmers’ conference and it was followed by Ghana Day celebrations.
The conference, which was co-chaired by former Government Minister, Dr. Simpson DaSilva and Dr. Vernon McPherson was a follow-up to the Food Security Conference held in late January, to which the diplomatic and donor communities were invited, as observers, to hear about issues facing African farmers.
Ghana Day is celebrated locally because Ghana was the first Black African country to gain independence, on March 6, 1957 under the leadership of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
The March agenda for the AAGC continues with, on March 16, UMOJA Movie at  ACDA Thomas Lands, Georgetown headquarters (15:30 hrs); March 17,  Mocha Concert, at Mocha, East Bank Demerara (13:00hrs); March 18,  Linden Concert, Linden (19:00 hrs); March 24,  Hall of Heroes inauguration at ACDA headquarters (11:00 hrs); March 26,  ‘Seed to Pot’, ACDA headquarters (10:00 hrs) and March 27, Buxton Concert, Buxton, East Coast Demerara (17:00 hrs).
