THE Police Sergeant, who is alleged to have sodomised a young recruit, made a court appearance yesterday.
Dexter Clementson, who is attached to the Tactical Service Unit (TUS), at Eve Leary, Georgetown, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, in Chambers, charged with rape under the new Sexual Offences Act. Particulars of the indictable offence said it was committed on March 3 and the accused was put on $300,000 bail until April 6.
Clementson, had been under close arrest before yesterday, was ordered, by the magistrate, to lodge his passport.
In an apparent attempt to conceal the identity of the accused, some other members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) stationed at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, told reporters the case cannot be reported because it was called in camera.
However, the Police Public Relations Office issued a press release, stating that the charge resulted from advice by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) following investigations into the allegation that Clementson had sexually assaulted the male police recruit.
The release pointed out that the incident did not occur at Felix Austin Police College as had been stated in sections of the media.
