IN his drivel on the 1973 rigged elections (KN Mar 4), Malcolm Harripaul, a new-found convert to the PNC’s cause and self-proclaimed cheerleader of Mr. David Granger’s candidacy, is trying to rewrite history. Harripaul’s account of that stolen election is not accurate. My father gave me a different eyewitness version. The GDF came out and intimidated voters and seized the ballot boxes, dumping legitimate votes and replacing them with fraudulent votes. The GDF rigged the elections and Granger was there as a loyal soldier to Burnham and the PNC.
We cannot erase that fact and it will come up again and again during the campaign as it should. Granger’s past is relevant in the debate on who will be better as President of Guyana, as much as the others who seek the presidency.
Harripaul also attacked Dr. Jagan, saying that Jagan was tied to rigging. Dr. Jagan never rigged an election and never stole a penny from anyone or the treasury. The same cannot be said of Harripaul.
With no relevance to the 1973 election, Harripaul, a known fraudster, made reference to “a known poll fraudster” in his missive. Working at customs, Harripaul knows a lot about fraud and fraudsters, especially those who got fired for getting caught with their hands in the cookie jar by Dr. Jagan and being fired by then Finance Minister Jagdeo. That is why he can be liberal with his usage of the term.
Harripaul is writing like his friend Freddie Kissoon – not defining their terms and making unsubstantiated allegations. Was his friend Dick Morris not involved in fraud? And isn’t his other friend Freddie Kissoon not involved in fraud by misleading people about Guyana?
