-scheduled to be completed for September term
The People’s Progressive Party Civic Government has been prioritising education as a key component in poverty reduction, and this focus is reflected in its yearly budgetary allocations.
Education takes a large chunk of the budget;and in 2011, it has taken, as in 2010, the largest portion. This year, $23.4 billion has been allocated for the sector, with focus on improving literacy and infrastructure among other aspects.
The new Leonora Secondary School, under construction at a cost of $293.5 M,has the capacity to accommodate 1,000 students from Region Three. It is expected that the modern structure will be ready for the September school term.
During a visit to Region Three on Friday, Education Minister Shaik Baksh, along with Regional Chairman Julius Faerber, ministry managers and the contractors conducted a spot check on the progress of the new school on the West Coast Demerara.
Students will have access to modernised facilities since the school will be outfitted with science and computer laboratories, library and technical and vocational education rooms.
An administrative building, sanitary blocks and 25 classrooms are also in the building’s plan.
This new facility adds to the three new primary schools which were completed last year in Region Three, at Parfait Harmonie, Belle West and Tuschen.
The ministry will also be addressing the availability of nursery schools.
In recent years, the government has constructed several modern schools, equipped with laboratories and libraries. These include a school at Three Miles at Bartica, Region Seven; Mahaica Secondary and Diamond Secondary, Region Four; and Wisroc Secondary, Region Ten. (GINA)
