I WRITE concerning this issue of overseas Guyanese and their so-called great contribution to Guyana. I beg to disagree with such arguments and offer the following reasons why. 1. Overseas Guyanese reminds me of a man who leaves his wife for a younger woman. After years of toil and labour with the younger woman she then decides she does not want him anymore. He then returns to his wife when all his strength and wealth is gone and he is no longer needed by his young and more sophisticated lover.
This is the case with overseas Guyanese, who leave Guyana for more developed countries and, after giving their best to these countries, they return to Guyana when they are very old and sick and their adopted country no longer have any use for them. That is the reality.
2. My second reason is that many of the remittances that are sent to relatives and sent to direct dependents, such as children and parents, is that they are obligated to maintain these persons.
3. Many overseas Guyanese impoverished Guyana, in that they borrowed loans from institutions such as the University of Guyana, the Credit Union and the Ministry of Finance and never repaid these loans. Because of their actions, it is extremely difficult to obtain loans from these institutions. As a Public Servant, I know personally of this situation.
They boast about how much money they are making and still refuse to repay their loans. Many of the teachers and other University graduates never repay their loans, and yet they return to Guyana to complain when, by their very actions, they are destroying Guyana. They would think that they are punishing the government, but in reality it is the working-class people who suffer. Why it is so difficult to repay the University that assisted you to get the very job that you have now?
In closing, I hope that overseas-based Guyanese would not be allowed to vote in General Elections and hope that they would stop bringing down our beautiful country.
Many overseas-based Guyanese have not repaid loans from government
