Celebration of Youman Nabi teaches us that we share ‘a common humanity’

– GAWU
YOUMAN Nabi, the prayerful and joyful celebration of the birth of  Prophet Mohamed by the nation’s Islamic community, is one such occasion which obliges the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) to send its warmest greetings to the Muslim brothers and sisters across Guyana.
GAWU, in a Youman Nabi message, said this year limits its sentiments to just two aspects of the Holy Prophet which the union think should be embraced by the followers who in turn should, by their daily deeds, influence appropriate behaviours by their fellow Guyanese.

Firstly, the Muslim Holy Records show that the Prophet, as exemplified by the celebration of Youman Nabi, “teaches us that we share a common humanity”.

“…we need to understand that we should work together, even after shelving or sorting out differences, as a nation, to achieve a common good,” the union stated.

Secondly, it said the Prophet preached and taught relentlessly, the combined message of peace, love, compassion and humanity. In their manifestation, this advice is a formula for fighting poverty, injustice and oppression. That is universal in its theme, GAWU said.

“Especially in this period in modern Middle Eastern history, the observance of the Prophet’s birth should also remind us that the people of any nation hold the key to the achievement of justice and progress. Spiritual guidance leads to practical applications where the will of the people in their own interest, will eventually prevail,” GAWU said.

The union also noted that Guyana’s Islamic Community certainly realizes, by now, that the rights and freedom to observe and practice their beliefs, unhindered by any selfish, tribal injunctions, attest, at the minimum, to the peace we all share here.

“Let peace promote progress! Let the spirit of Youman Nabi infuse all Muslims to inspire all other Guyanese to heights of love and achievement,” GAWU concluded in its Youman Nabi message.
