United Insurance Schools’ Mashramani basketball launched

… 12 schools invited by St Stanislaus College
ST Stanislaus College will be hosting an Invitational schools’ basketball tournament, set to bounce off at the school’s court on Monday 14th. United Insurance is the sole sponsor of the competition which will involve 12 schools, including President’s College and Plaisance Secondary the only teams not from within the City.
At a simple launch held at the school’s auditorium on Brickdam, yesterday, Claims Officer of United Insurance, Vibert Austin, spoke of his company’s commitment to the tournament and the rewards of playing sports.
“United Insurance is committed to this competition which we think is quite a great initiative. A recent study revealed that students who are inclined to sports are more successful in terms of achieving the academic goals they set for themselves.
“We are grateful for being part of this tournament and will be supporting it throughout. I hope that it will be competed in a spirit of love and I trust that it will continue to be a success as this is just the beginning of our support,” Austin declared.
The competition will be played on a first round round-robin group play with the teams divided into four equal groups and at the end of the group play the top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals KO stage.
Group A will consist of Charlestown Secondary, Marian Academy and Brickdam Secondary; Group B – Plaisance Secondary, School of the Nations and St Rose’s  High; Group C – Bishops’ High, Guyana Education Trust College and President’s College and Group D – The Business School and old rivals Queen’s College and the hosts, St Stanislaus College.
In opening play set for 15:30 h on Monday Marian Academy will match skills with Charlestown Secondary and in the game to follow School of the Nations will come up against Plaisance Secondary.
The next day (Tuesday), Brickdam Secondary will face Marian Academy at 15:30 h before St Rose’s confront School of the Nations.
All matches will be played at the St Stanislaus College Court on Brickdam and according to Tournament Coordinator, Ronald Jordan, among the prizes that will be up for grabs are: the winners’ trophy and medals, the runners-up trophy and medals and the MVP of the tournament which will climax on the eve of Republic Day.
