Prashad declares Hosororo Falls spectacular creation of nature

For tourism…
MINISTER of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Mr. Manniram Prashad, has declared Hosororo Falls, in Region One (Barima/Waini), a spectacular creation of nature.
He made the declaration at Mabaruma, also in North West District, last Saturday, while there with officials of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) and the ministry, to welcome a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) team sojourning in the Waini River to begin filming for the ‘Serious Explorers Raleigh’ series.
The Britishers sailed into the Waini on the ‘Scaramouche’ last Friday, from Trinidad and Tobago, to retrace the steps of Sir Walter Raleigh in his search for the fabled City of Gold, El Dorado.
While at the waterfall, Prashad remarked that little is known of its stunning beauty which is brimming with tourism potential.
“It is one of the special falls which most Guyanese don’t know about. I recommend that people visiting Mabaruma come and see the Hosororo Falls. It is a spectacular creation of nature,” he said.
Hosororo Falls, located three miles from Mabaruma, runs directly from the Hosororo Hills and is one of the 300 falls to be found in this country and can be promoted in ‘Destination Guyana’, Prashad stated.

Acknowledging its potential as a tourist destination, he said the Tourism Ministry would be promoting this unknown natural attraction and encouraging visitors from abroad and from the Guyanese Diaspora to visit and enjoy Hosororo Waterfalls.
“It is a beautiful waterfall and the Ministry of Tourism will be looking at this and a number of other waterfalls in an effort to sensitise persons about all of the exciting tourist attractions,” Prashad stated.
Regional Vice-Chairman, Mr. Paul Pierre informed that the waterfall has been in existence for quite some time but was left unattended for many years but it is the hope of the region that it be highlighted as a popular tourist attraction.

HOPE
“Our hope is to revive it and I am glad that the Minister of Tourism was there to have a look at it and to identify areas which can be improved,” Pierre said.
In an effort to maintain the surroundings, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) soldiers were on site clearing the path leading to the falls, as well.
Pierre said they were part of a group who came together to improve the conditions leading to the destination, as part of the monthly programme for the approaching Mashramani celebrations.
“There are many persons involved in this. We have soldiers, nurses and community as well as church members who came together to ensure that the site is presentable for the visitors who will be coming here for Mashramani,” he said.
Pierre also noted that Mabaruma is also home to the National Agriculture Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) nursery which is in the process of growing turmeric, nutmeg, blackpepper and ginger, among other crops.
“We have the spice project underway now and we are expecting the installation of a processing plant which will move it further and help us to be recognised,” he said.
