IT has been more than a week since the Mandela dump site was officially closed and according to Georgetown Mayor Hamilton Green, the city constabulary will be guarding the site, keeping out pickers and trespassers. However, during a visit to the site yesterday, at the invitation of Local Government Minister Kellawan Lall, the Guyana Chronicle observed that several pickers were entering and leaving unhindered, despite the fact that there were two constables on duty.
When the Chronicle photographer attempted to take photographs, one of the constables on duty proceeded to verbally and physically abuse him.
This was witnessed by a Chronicle Reporter as well as two staffers from TV Channel 2.
The Guyana Chronicle intends to bring this incident to the attention of the authorities, though efforts to contact Minister Lall and Public Relations Officer at City Hall, Mr. Royston King, last evening were futile.
