Guyana needs builders not haters

WE all can agree that Kaieteur News columnist, Freddie Kissoon often highlights contentious issues which some people no doubt, find very interesting and informative. From time to time Kissoon does indeed touch on important topics of national interest. This in itself is commendable and encouraging because Kissoon’s freedom to express his views is an indicator that we have become a tolerant society with deepening democratic values.

While press freedom is considered as a right, especially in the western developed countries, it also comes with immense responsibility. Therein lies the problem as it relates to Freddie Kissoon.

This columnist has consistently flouted and disregarded the basic tenets of journalism by printing material that is often scandalous and malicious in nature. This is done with little or no regard for fairness and accuracy. It seems to be driven by a dark hatred of the government of this land we call home.

This situation cannot be allowed to continue, especially in an election year when people become increasingly tense and stressed. To have Kissoon spew his hatred and venom unchecked would spell certain disaster and destroy an otherwise peaceful pre-election atmosphere.  Guyana does not need haters, but builders.

I am also surprised that Kissoon, especially being a university lecturer, seems to be incapable of offering constructive criticism, but is more comfortable with confrontations, mudslinging, theatrics and high drama.

The last election was peaceful and incident free. All Guyanese would like this one to be the same. Anyone whose actions and utterances threaten that peace must be seen as a threat to national security and treated as such.
