M&CC 2011 budget to be ready soon

…will allow for staff reduction, emergency works
THE Mayor and City Council’s (M&CC) budget for 2011 is expected to be completed by Friday or during the first week of January, Georgetown Deputy Mayor Robert Williams has said.
Speaking at a press conference last week at City Hall, Williams said the 2011 budget will deal with the reduction of staff and restructuring so as to accommodate the reduced work force.
He said focus will be on drainage, solid waste and roads, adding that emergency works, such as repairs to the concert hall at City Hall will also be undertaken.
Meanwhile, Public Relations Officer at M&CC, Royston King, said in a press release recently that the council wishes to thank all of its employees for their commitment to the work of the city. “Frankly, without the hard work and commitment of employees, in harsh conditions, the council could not have achieved drainage, environmental and other works, communities,” he stated.
“Looking back, employees endured, with patience and understanding, many difficulties. The tight economic situation and precarious financial reality in which council must serve the citizens affected its ability to meet its financial and other obligations to its staff. Still, they pressed on cleaning our canals, repairing bridges, enforcing the city by-laws, and providing maternal and child welfare and day care services to citizens,” King added.
He said many workers have been in the employ of council for more than two decades and that they have worked with great dedication, with little remuneration in their particular stations.
“We recognise that our workers are among our precious assets. We care for their welfare and well- being. This is essentially why we will continue to make every effort to create the appropriate environment that would enhance their personal development and work performance,” he said.
