Police confirm identity of Laing Avenue canal body

POLICE have confirmed that the body taken out of the Laing Avenue canal, in West Ruimveldt, on Tuesday, is that of Paul Peters, 21, of East Ruimveldt, Front Road. It was discovered by residents of Third Block, Laing Avenue and pulled from the water by the Police, who took it to Lyken Funeral Parlour, on Norton Street, also in Georgetown.
Those who made the discovery had told the media they believe the corpse is that of one of the bandits who robbed the Mandela Avenue Texaco Gas Station on Sunday night.
One resident recalled seeing a man running and, shortly after, jumping into the waterway with Police in hot pursuit.
Reports are that the same man succumbed to at least two gunshot wounds, one in the lower back and the other under an armpit.
Police reported, too, that Leon Bynoe, 28, of South Ruimveldt, was shot and wounded during that Mandela Avenue armed robbery, about 20:30 hrs.
He was purchasing fuel for his motorcycle when three men, one of whom was armed, held pump attendant Andrea Sealey, cashier Lavern Andrews and customer Tricia Walcott at gunpoint and robbed them of an undisclosed sum of money.
Police said, as the robbers were escaping, the one with the gun discharged a round which struck Bynoe on his left thigh and caused him to be hospitalised. (Michel Outridge)
