THE dead body of an unidentified man was discovered lying face down in a canal at Third Block, Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, yesterday morning.
Residents who made the discovery said, clad in blue jeans and a black belt, it was floating in the water about 09:30 hrs. They told the media they believe the corpse is that of one of the bandits who robbed the Mandela Avenue Texaco Gas Station on Sunday night.
One resident recalled seeing a man running and, shortly after, jumping into the waterway with Police in hot pursuit.
It is suspected that the same man succumbed to at least two gunshot wounds, one in the lower back and the other under an armpit.
Police had reported that Leon Bynoe was shot and injured during that armed robbery at the Mandela Avenue fuel station on Sunday.
The report said it happened about 20:30 hrs, when Bynoe, 28, of South Ruimveldt, also in the city, was purchasing fuel for his motorcycle and three men, one of whom was armed, held pump attendant Andrea Sealey; cashier Lavern Andrews and customerTricia Walcott at gunpoint and took an undisclosed sum of cash from them.
The Police said, as the robbers were escaping, the one with the gun discharged a round which struck Bynoe on his left thigh.
He is now a patient at Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).
