– to lower East Bank communities today
THE Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company is launching its E-magine Broadband service today on the lower East Bank Demerara as the company expands its coverage to ensure that all Guyanese experience superior and reliable internet access. As part of this expansion, customers residing at Eccles and Grove/Diamond Housing Schemes will see their service being activated.
Telephone numbers ranging between 233-2000 to 233-3999 in the Eccles area will benefit, while in neighbouring Nandy Park, the numbers ranging from 233-5000 to 233-7999; Diamond 265-0000 to 265-6999 and Grove/Diamond Housing Scheme 216-0000 to 216-9999 will benefit.
E-magine is GT&T’s broadband service which brings high-speed and high-bandwidth to homes and businesses over copper telephone lines already installed.
With E-magine Broadband, consumers and businesses can take advantage of having a fixed, always-on connection to the Internet. The E-magine service allows for consumers to access popular social websites, partaking in online gaming, educational activities, banking and other internet based applications, while the business community can take advantage of the lightning speeds to engage the world of commerce through the internet connectivity.
According to a press statement from GT&T, the business community in Georgetown has been able to take full advantage of the E-magine service to enable online ordering of goods and services as well as to engage financial transactions through online banking.
At the launch of E-magine in July this year, Chief Executive Officer of GT&T Mr. Yog Mahadeo had assured that the service which serves customers in Georgetown and up to the village of Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, will be rolled out in phases.
“Today’s roll out is testimony to this,” GT&T said, adding that customers can sign up for service at any GT&T Business Office, G3 Building (Diamond Grove Housing Scheme) or Brickdam (the former site of Bureau of Statistics) and get the modem at a 50% discount.
GT&T is urging customers outside the catchment areas where the service is being offered at the moment, to keep track of the company’s developmental plans as soon their areas could experience the service.
The E-magine broadband service has resulted in residents in Georgetown and its environs having access to four times more bandwidth at cheaper prices.
In January, GT&T commissioned the shore-end landing of the Suriname/Guyana submarine cable (SG-SCS), which has a capacity of 264 gigawaves, at the Kingston seawall.
The project links the two countries through a state-of-the-art 1,200-kilometre (700-mile) submarine fibre optic cable connected to a worldwide network of similar cables through a landing station in Trinidad.
The cable is routed from Chaguaramas, Trinidad to a branching unit in the Atlantic from where it is then diverted to Georgetown and Paramaribo in Suriname. The new cable offers 3,000 to 4,000 times more bandwidth than what is available through the Americas 11 cable and satellite link.
