On High Court petition…

Previously refused drug defendant secures bail
SIXTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD Hubert Giddings alias ‘Jug’, facing a drug charge, was granted $125,000 bail, on a petition to acting Chief Justice Ian Chang in the Berbice High Court on Wednesday.
The petitioner had previously appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, in New Amsterdam, charged with trafficking 20 grammes of cannabis (marijuana) and was refused pre-trial liberty.

However, while he was on remand in prison, attorney-at-law Mr. Mursulene Bacchus petitioned the judge, citing health reasons and the prisoner’s age.
Police had stopped Giddings, last November 12, shortly after 11:00 h, while he was driving along Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam and he was searched by ranks on mobile patrol who said they found leaves, seeds and stems of the prohibited plant in a haversack he was carrying.
The defendant has to make his next Court appearance on December 28.
