ALL possible steps have been taken to minimise the effects of excess rainfall in Guyana, despite its vulnerability by being geographically below sea level and against the background of recent flooding in neighbouring Brazil, Suriname, Venezuela and landslides in Colombia.
The assurance was given by head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS) Dr. Roger Luncheon, on Wednesday at his post-Cabinet media briefing.
He said several outreaches have been conducted countrywide, in the effort to sensitise residents to climate change and how they can assist in minimising such risks.
Luncheon reported that the Ministry of Agriculture and its agencies are fully prepared to deal with the current La Nina weather conditions and, having made significant interventions to date, the Administration has every faith in that Ministry.
He said Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud has been ably supported in his work by a team established in his ministry, comprising personnel from Public Works, Health, Sea and River Defence and the Ministry of Finance, the last in relation to budgetary allocations.
“So, a tremendous amount of work has been done and, if I could have recapped what I said before, Minister Persaud has doubled efforts and, as such, we are well prepared to tackle La Nina,” Luncheon reitertated.
