Minister Ali details Region Ten development projects

REGION Ten (Upper Demerara/Berbice) has benefited from tremendous investments and infrastructural improvements over the past four years, through projects completed by the Ministry of Housing and Water. The Region is also set to witness the completion of several others next year, Minister with the portfolio, Mr. Irfaan Ali said.
He said, earlier this week, that some of the dynamic transfornation is already evident in the condition of roads and the provision of water and electricity to residents at a cost of $600M.
Ali said, during the period in review, millions of dollars have been injected, by the Government and his ministry, into the construction of new roadways, the most notable of which is the investment of $150 M, to build drains and structures in Block 22, Wismar, Linden.
He said works done in that area resulted in the building of 4.12 miles of roads, concrete and laterite curbs as well as erosion control fixtures, for the benefit of some 3,000 people.
Ali said, between 2005 and 2009, a total of eight road projects were completed in that Region, costing approximately $330,536,699, in Block 22, Wismar, West Watooka, South Amelia’s Ward, Speightland, Canvas City , Buck Hill, Green Valley and Amelia’s Ward Phase Two B, in Linden, for 11,000 beneficiaries.
He said, in addition, several communities in Amelia’s Ward, Phases One A, One B and Two B saw the installation of pure water distribution networks and electricity.
Ali said the clearing of approximately 220 acres of land for a new housing scheme in Amelia’s Ward Phase Three has been done and the construction of roads and drains, the installation of pure water distribution pipes as well as electricity are expected to be accomplished next year, simultaneously with the upgrading of roadways and the digging of drains in Phases One B and Two B.
He said, at the conclusion of the undertaking in Amelia’s Ward Phase Three, almost $1 billion would have been spent in Region Ten, delivering benefits and improving the lives of  almost 14,000 people.
