Ammunition shipment from Canada results in overnight remand

A CANADIAN pensioner and a Machinery Corporation of Guyana (MACORP) supervisor were both remanded to prison on Monday on charges of unlawful possession of ammunition discovered in a barrel at John Fernandes Wharf. Sixty-three-year-old Jamiel Ahmad Khan and 25-year-old Asif Sahid (no addresses given) were not required to plead to the indictable charge, which said, on November 26, without lawful authority, they were in possession of 500 rounds of ‘Winchester’ .22 ammunition, 100 rounds of ‘Remington’, 20 rounds of ‘Winchester Super X’ ammunition, 499 rounds of ‘Golden Bullet’ .22 ammunition, 99 rounds of ‘Thunderbolt’ .22 ammunition and 79 rounds of ‘Remington 30-30 Thunderbolt’ .22 ammunition, while not being holders of Guyana firearm licences.

Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, said Khan, who is the holder of a Canadian firearm licence, posted a barrel containing the ammo from Canada and, when local Customs officers summoned the two accused, they admitted ownership of its contents.

The Prosecutor successfully objected to bail for the duo and requested time to seek further legal advice.

Attorney-at-law Ms. Latoya Hobbs, for the prisoners, said they imported the ammunition for hunting purposes and it was not the first time they shipped such cargo.

She said she has an application, made to the Ministry of Home Affairs, for permission to ship a consignment on a previous occasion.

However, bail was denied Khan and Sahid, who was incarcerated overnight and return to Court yesterday.
