Lawyer alleges murder accused forced to sign statement

ANTONIO Jaisingh (no address given) was on Monday remanded to prison on a murder charge when he appeared before Magistrate Suanna Lovell at Providence Court. He was not required to plead to the charge, which said he committed the capital offence on November 26, at Sarah Johanna, East Bank Demerara, where he murdered Randy Joseph.

Attorney-at-law Mr. Paul Fung-A-Fat, for the accused, claimed the victim was the aggressor and Jaisingh was trying to defend himself when Joseph suffered the fatal injuries.

The lawyer alleged that the Police forced Jaisingh to sign a statement in the absence of a counsel.

Jaisingh will make another Court appearance on January 12, 2011. (Nathalene DeFreitas)
