-Umpires also named to officiate in matches
NATIONAL middle- order batsman Gajanand Singh who was once arguably the best young batsman in the country, has been selected to lead the Rest Team in the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) organised Carib Beer/Pepsi sponsored four team Twenty20 tournament which gets underway this Friday at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence. While the GCB senior selection panel led by Claude Raphael named the Rest Team which is made up of players who found it difficult to make their Inter-county teams for the tournament, the Guyana Cricket Umpires Council (GCUC) led by new president Dhieranidranauth Somwaru has selected the umpires for the tournament.
The 23 year old Singh who was born in Berbice and represented that County before moving to Demerara where he now plays for New Line Cavaliers, played eight first class matches for Guyana where he aggregated 350 runs at an average of 29.16 with a highest score of 66.
Former Guyana/Stanford T20 player Dion Ferrier, who is one of the fittest cricketers around, will serve under Singh as his deputy, with batsmen Trevon Griffith, Andrew Lyght Jnr, Ranga Latchana, Shemroy Barrington, Anthony Bramble, Maxie De Jonge and Vishal Singh all included in the team.
Their bowling will be led by Kellon Carmichael, Renwick Batson and Eugene La Fleur, who are no rabbits with the bat, Keyron Fraser and Steven Latcha and Ferrier, with Griffith offering support if needed for the team who play their first match against Essequibo from 15:00h on Friday.
The full 14 man squad who have been asked to report to the Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence at 16:00h today reads: Gajanand Singh (Captain), Dion Ferrier (Vice-Captain), Vishal Singh, Andrew Lyght Jnr, Trevon Griffith, Renwick Batson, Anthony Bramble, Ranga Latchana, Eugene La Fleur, Shemroy Barrington, Maxie De Jonge, Kellon Carmichael, Keyron Fraser and Steven Latcha.
Meanwhile, umpires Daverteeth Anandjit and Matthew Kissoon will officiate in the Essequibo/Rest Team matchup, with N. Shivsankar being the third official. Somwaru and Shivsankar will officiate in the Demerara/Cellink Berbice contest which bowls off at 19:00h, with Kissoon being the third official.
On Saturday 4th December, Cellink Berbice who are the defending champions will take on Essequibo from 15:00h under the supervision of Colin Alfred and Gavin Sukhdeo with Z. Moakhan being the standby official, while Moakhan and Shannon Crawford will officiate in the contest between the Rest Team and Demerara, with Sukhdeo being the third official.
Sunday is the final day of preliminary action and will see Cellink Berbice opposing the Rest Team under the supervision of Anandjit and Clyde Duncan with Clement Brusche as the standby, following which Demerara oppose Essequibo under the supervision of Brusche and Nigel Duguid, with Anandjit being the third official.
The third place matchup as well as the finals take place on Sunday 10th December with Alfred and Somwaru officiating in the third place playoff while Duncan and Duguid will take charge of the finals, with Kissoon and Crawford being the third umpires for the respective matches on that day, with all matches being played at 15:00h and 19:00h respectively.
