I was standing behind a vendor at the Zeeburg market when a consumer came and requested a pound of cabbage. To my surprise the vendor set the scale at 300 grammes.
Now as far as I know the equivalent of one pound is 450 grammes and therefore this consumer must have been one of the many who are being ripped off on a daily basis not only at this market but at the others across the country because most of the vendors do not use the scales with the displays where the consumer could view the weight of the item. Instead most vendors use the metal sliding scales which do not carry displays and therefore the vendor could do as he/she pleases.
The Guyana National Bureau of Standards and the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce should address this matter and prevent hapless consumers from being ripped off by these heartless vendors.
