City Council committee to look at setting up crematorium in Le Repentir

DEPUTY Mayor Georgetown, Robert Williams, Monday named approximately eight councillors to form a new committee to look into the establishment of a crematorium in Georgetown in view of overcrowding in Le Repentir Cemetery.
Williams took this action at the council’s statutory meeting following a proposal by Councillor Ranwell Jordan to have such a facility in place.

Speaking with the Chronicle on the telephone yesterday, Jordan said a crematorium in the city is “very much in demand” at present.
According to Jordan, a former mayor had proposed that an area on the East Coast of Demerara be used as a new burial site. But the location has since been earmarked for a housing project, he said.

Jordan said he will suggest to the committee that the crematorium be constructed in Le Repentir Cemetery.
